30 under 30?

30 under 30?

This week Forbes release their annual 30 under 30, a list of young people who are making an impact in their current industries.  This year’s honorees were quite impressive. I would like to congratulate all of the young people who made the 30 under 30, YOU DID THE DAMN THING!

This message is for the people who are approaching 30 (or the people over 30) who feel they haven’t accomplished anything. DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO THEM! Many of the young people on this list have wealthy parents (there is nothing wrong with that) who are able to help their children succeed in untraditional ways (Hell, if I had children and the resources I would do the same thing).

My point is that things happen to you when they are supposed to (I’m talking about good things) but you have to do your part (as Iyanla Vanzant says, DO YOUR WORK!).  It is easy to compare yourself to other people but you don’t know their struggle and they don’t know yours.  Work at your own pace and don’t subscribe to the narrative of you have 24 hours so there is no excuse.  You have a life (some of you have responsibilities children, bills, etc.) that you can’t leave on the back burner but maximize the time you do have. If it is 10 minutes make it a productive 10 minutes.

Lastly, give yourself a round of applause for the things you do achieve.  Don’t minimize yourself. For example, I use to be really hard on myself because I graduated in 5 years (when my peers were doing it in 4) but I have realize that in 5 years I earned 2 degrees (Associate’s and Bachelor’s, not bragging but stating facts). I DID IT and no one can take that from me.  I encourage whoever reads this to do the same give yourself a hand and share your accomplishments (in the comments if you would like). If you don’t make the 30 under 30 (if that’s something you care about), there is always the 40 under 40, 60 under 60, or even the 80 under 80. There is still time keep working. YOU WILL GET THERE!
